Music therapy has many benefits, it can be used to bring a more positive state of mind, helping to keep depression and anxiety at bay. Communicating through music therapy provides a safe space and effective time to express ones emotions, feelings, and can give those individuals with communication difficulties a voice and means of expression; in turn reducing behavioural issues/incidents.

The overall aim of music therapy is to enable each client to access their full potential through creative musical expression. A universal language, the ability to respond to music is unaffected by illness and disability. Through music, whether this is playing simple percussion instruments, using the voice or moving with the body, everyone can develop their own personal style of expression. In music therapy service users who find verbal communication difficult or impossible are supported in a safe therapeutic environment to find new channels for self-expression.
Music therapist Cathy Rowland says:
“I view the client-centered service I offer as an integral part of the holistic care environment at Independence Homes. While some service users experience gradual changes over time, with others change can be more immediate and life-enhancing.
“D began having individual music therapy six months ago. At first he was anxious and withdrawn and the only music he would share with me was from his favourite CD. As he got to know me, he began to relax and found the confidence to explore many expressive possibilities on the drums and the piano. Music therapy gives him the confidence to express himself however that may be, from week to week.”
