Packed Independence Homes conference for parents “superbly informative”

Independence Homes is now considering plans for future conferences after hosting a packed event for carers and parents of young people with epilepsy at its Croydon headquarters. More than 50 people heard a variety of speakers explain the kind of housing and care options that exist for adults with epilepsy and learning disability, and feedback from delegates suggests that the information was very well received and highly informative.

Dr Melanie MacLeod, director of care at Independence Homes, said:

“Finding the right care provider, and then securing the necessary funding, can be an extremely challenging process for most people. It’s never too early to start considering the options. One of our key messages is to find the appropriate balance between safety and independence, and I think this resonates with many of the people who attended the Conference at the weekend.”

Independence Homes provides both residential care and supported living packages. Dr MacLeod continues:

“There was a lot of interest in our new Liberty Court service in Purley. This is a new development of one and two bed apartments, built and equipped to extremely high standards, in which service users will be responsible for their own tenancies. It’s not good for anyone to be bored, and our philosophy is geared around helping our service users to lead a full and active life, helping them to take control of their lives.”

Independence Homes was formed in 1997 specifically to help people with epilepsy and learning difficulties to fulfill their potential and achieve their own objectives. Independence Homes provides accommodation and support for adults living with epilepsy, other medical needs and learning disability. Today, Independence Homes employs almost 200 staff and support over 50 adults in both supported living programmes and community based residential care.
